Use it or lose it, says Mayor

The Mayor of Kilkenny has raised a heartfelt plea for the people of Kilkenny to throw their support behind local businesses.

Cllr Martin Brett said the reality hit home when he saw a sign saying ‘use it or lose it’ during a recent trip to Portlaoise, with the message that if people do not support local businesses they will be gone.

“We are in the middle of a serious economic situation and there is a serious cry from businesses in this city for us to help them,” he told his fellow councillors at a meeting this week.

“I would like to encourage each and every person in this city to support our business community. Together we can work for the benefit of all.”

In the current economic climate a number of businesses in the city are struggling and the Mayor said it was imperative that residents supported these businesses before they were lost for good, which could spell disaster for the local economy.

“If we don’t encourage people to come here and shop in local shops then we will lose them. In supporting local businesses everybody gains and nobody loses,” he said.
