Kilkenny is set to embrace its culture this month in an innovative evening in which some of the city and county’s celebrated landmarks and attractions will offer free events and late night opening.
Locals and visitors alike will get the opportunity to revel in the freedom of some of the medieval city’s famous galleries, museums, cathedrals and theatres.
Kilkenny is one of 20 cities, towns and counties taking part in the largest ‘Culture Night’ to date, offering up a diverse range of fun and entertainment, including music, visual art, stories, poetry and plays.
Kilkenny Culture Night will take place on September 24 between 5.30pm and 11pm.
The National Craft Gallery in the Castle Yard will host a paper lantern installation alongside tours of exhibitions such as ‘Embrace Technology’ and ‘My Objects of Attachment’ as well as a performance by Dublin folk-singer Jennifer Evans.
A ‘city heritage walk’ starting at the Parade kiosk at 6pm will take participants on a leisurely tour through the city visiting landmarks including the Tholsel, Rothe House and St Canice’s Cathedral with well-known tour guide Pat Tynan.
The Arts Office at 76 John Street will host the historic exhibition from internationally renowned feminist arts group Guerilla Girls which debuted at the recent Arts Festival and adult storytime ‘Feminist Fairy Tales’ with performers Susie Lamb, Geraldine Plunkett and Louise Bradley.
Loughboy library will host an exhibition celebrating traveller culture, including adult and children’s crafts, photographs, paintings, a performance by singing sensation Selina O’Leary with singers from the local traveller community and storytelling sessions.
‘What’s on Tom?’, a series of productions by local and national playwrights, will take place in Set Theatre at Langton’s on John Street at 8pm.
