Kilkenny Carnegie Library celebrates 100 years

Kilkenny Carnegie Library celebrates 100 years providing community access to reading, cultural and learning resources.

To mark this special birthday Kilkenny Library Service is hosting a programme of events in September/October culminating in a day of celebrations on November 3 – the date the library was officially opened 100 years ago.

The Kilkenny Carnegie Library ‘100 celebrations’ will incorporate a series of centenary talks including the following speakers: Joseph O’Connor, Anthony Glavin, Anne Enright (Man Booker Prize winner ) , Thomas Kilroy, Dermot Bolger, Brendan Grimes (the History of Carnegie Libraries ), Dr Kevin Whelan (the History of Hurling in Kilkenny before the GAA ) and Paul Howard of Ross O’Carroll-Kelly fame.

“I am impressed by the line up for Kilkenny Carnegie Library 100, the talk on the History of Hurling in Kilkenny before the GAA should be of great interest to hurling fans.” said Brian Cody, Kilkenny Hurling manager and Freeman of Kilkenny City, who launched the programme brochure.

City Library branch manager Aisling Kelly said, “we have an action packed programme including the centenary talks, local radio coverage, Gospel singing, exhibitions, storytelling, competitions and children’s activities – visits by Eanna Ni Lamhna, Don Conroy, Niall de Burca (storyteller ) and Melissa Baker with her storytelling caravan. While a booklet on the social and historical importance of the Library Service over the last 100 years will also be published. All events at the library are free and everyone is welcome.”

Kilkenny Carnegie Library 100 programme brochure is on the library website www.kilkennylibrary.ie and is also available now at the City Library.
