It was a memorable day for South Kilkenny as Mooncoin, Rower-Inistigoe and Mullinavat all landed league honours. Firstly, a double header of league finals took place in well represented Ballyhale as the St Canice’s Credit Union Junior B and intermediate league finals were down for decision.
Mooncoin deservedly won a well contested junior B final as they defeated O'Loughlin Gaels as 16-year-old Sarah Crowley produced a sensational performance inspiring the Suirsiders to victory.
That was followed by Rower-Inistioge cruising to intermediate honours as they easily defeated Dicksboro 2-13 to 0-9. A scrappy first-half saw the Rower fortunate to lead by 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval before a fortuitous Lizzie Lyng goal early in the second-half put last year’s intermediate finalists in a commanding position.
The winners pushed the foot on the accelerator as Kelly Hamilton accurately pointed the frees, while Aoife Lyng was a constant handful upfront. A well taken second goal from Lizzie Lyng confirmed their superior dominance.
The St Canice’s Credit Union senior camogie league final saw Mullinavat land their first senior adult camogie title as they easily defeated St Lachtain’s 1-14 to 1-7.
A Leanne Fennelly goal in the 55th minute proved decisive, and despite Anne Dalton grabbing a goal back, the ‘Vat girls closed out proceedings with late points from Michelle Quilty (free ), Amy Butler and Angela Kenneally.
It was a real team performance from Mullinavat with Michelle Quilty scoring 0-8 (0-4 frees 0-3 '45s ).
Elsewhere, there was also important games down for decision in the quarter-finals of the St Canice’s Credit Union senior and intermediate championship quarter-finals.
Windgap and Ballyhale Shamrocks reached the semi-finals following their respective victories over St Martins and Thomastown.
Denise Gaule was the star on show scoring 2-5 as the Gap defeated St Martins 3-10 to 2-6, and second-half goals from Emma Nolan and Emily Dermody helped Ballyhale Shamrocks recover from a four point first-half deficit to run out winners by the slenderest of margins as they defeated Ballyhale Shamrocks 2-9 to 2-8 following a tantalising encounter.
In the intermediate grade Clara defeated Piltown 4-7 to 3-9 in the game of the weekend, where despite Katie Power scoring 3-3, they came up short by a solitary point.
Aoife Murphy grabbed a brace of goals to seal Clara’s semi-final place, while her namesake was in goalscoring mood, as the inter-county minor bagged a hat-trick of goals as Lisdowney overcame Paulstown 4-7 to 1-10.
Meanwhile, Tullogher secured a league final showdown with Blacks and Whites tomorrow afternoon as they defeated Tullaroan 2-11 to 2-8 in the final round of group games in the St Canice’s Credit Union junior league with Joanne Cotterell grabbing a brace of goals.
