An innovative service for children struggling with Dyslexia and other learning difficulties is about to be launched in Kilkenny.
Commencing shortly in the Father McGrath Centre the course entitled “Touch-type, read and spell” aims to improve reading, spelling and touch-typing skills.
During the course, the student will learn a vocabulary of 4,000 words through typing, seeing the words and sentences onscreen and hearing them on headphones. This three-strand approach means that the course is suitable for a variety of learning styles.
“Touch-type, read and spell” is currently being offered in over thirty centres in Ireland and as a result has proven to be very effective in developing the literacy, confidence, and self-esteem of children with learning difficulties. The course is also being used in many centres by the VEC to teach adults. Although it is relatively new here, it has been running in the UK for 16 years with a great deal of success. The founding company’s website www.ttrs.co.uk contains a wealth of information about TTRS and the research on which it is based.
The course will take place in the Father McGrath Centre on a one hour per week basis. For more information or to book a place contact Sinead on 086 3365333, Pat on 086 3185465 or e-mail patmurf@hotmail.com.
