Childhood memories are not necessarily haphazardly created by chance. As a parent you have a huge influence over your children’s experiences, and how they will recall them later in life.
RTE’s Gay Byrne recounts the time he was on his way to some big match with his young daughter, he met a friend and told him how this was such a special day to see Dublin playing and that his daughter was just as excited. She was going to remember it as a special day and remember how excited about it all he was too. His friend just looked at him and said, “make sure to buy her an ice cream cone, that is what she will remember about the day more than anything else.” Gay said later, “it was such good advice — I had forgotten to look at it from the child’s perspective.”
