Row over Rudkins’ Mill rumbles on

The future development of Rudkins’ Mill continues to dominate the political landscape in Bagenalstown as the town council seeks to gain ownership of the site.

With a development offer on the table from American businessman Brian Howard, councillors are desperate to gain control of the mill from Waterways Ireland and push ahead with negotiations.

“The question is do Waterways Ireland want to make a financial gain or do they have Bagenalstown’s interests at heart?” said Cllr David O’Brien.

“I hope the will of the Bagenalstown council will be adhered to.”

Cllr Paddy Kiely said he had been informed that Waterways Ireland had acquired a property in Athlone and after leaving it for a couple of years sold it for ‘millions’.

“If a government body is selling for profit to screw the likes of the people of Bagenalstown, in my opinion that is illegal. Waterways Ireland haven’t spent a shilling on it,” he said.

The council has agreed to continue in their attempts to gain control of the mill so that negotiations can begin with Mr Howard about the possible redevlopment of it.
