Foodies set out their stalls for Savour Kilkenny

Local food producers, speciality retailers and food historians are setting out their stalls as Kilkenny’s second annual food festival, Savour Kilkenny edges closer.

Savour Kilkenny takes place next week, from Thursday to Monday, October 24 to 27 and is expected to attract thousands of foodies from around the region.

A ‘Food Producers Fete’ will take place in the Castlecomer Discovery Park on the Saturday, where visitors can rediscover quality local foods and meet the producers.

In the city, the ‘Foodies on Foot’ tour, starting at 11am from the Tholsel on Saturday, will trace the development of diet and food matters in the city throughout its history. On Monday, a ‘Countrywide Food Trail’ offers separate morning and afternoon tours by bus from Kilkenny Castle, taking in renowned local producers such as Lavistown, Cramer’s Grove, Highbank Farm in Cuffesgrange, Goatsbridge Tour Farms, Mount Juliet and Knockdrinna Cheese. A full day ticket is €40.

Regular shoppers around Kilkenny city on Saturday will also get a flavour of the festival with leading outlets offering tastings, including Blueberry Café, Shortis Wong’s, The Two Dames, The Wine Centre, Café del Vino, Le Caveau, The Grapevine and The Parlour.

‘A Taste of the City’ returns on Sunday with food producers taking over Kieran Street with a riot of delicious food stalls.

Up in MacDonagh Junction, food retailers have banded together to offer a series of grazing opportunities in the Bagel Factory, Gloria Jeans and the Health Store.

And on the opening Friday, ‘Meet the Producers’ at Bassett’s at Woodstock, will offer a tasting dinner that specifically showcases the food of local producers.
