The St Joseph’s club were well represented in the national multi—events Championships held in Tullamore at the weekend. Athletes from the club took part in seven of the events and while amassing high scores in most they claimed medals in four – one gold, two silver and one bronze. In the under 14 pentathlon Paul Manning scored 2,345 points to win the silver medal.
John Joe Kelly, Brow Rangers, also figured well in this event finishing in 4th place with 2,248 points. Aaron Fenlon, St Josephs, was doing well in the under 15 pentathon, when he had to withdraw after scoring 1,229 points in three events. The highest score - 4,339 - was recorded by Eoin Power who won silver in the under 17 octathlon. Jack Saunders came close to a medal in the under 18 octathlon with 3,815 points. In the girls under 18 heptahlon, Emma Fenlon, with 3,564 points won bronze. Best of the men in the senior decathlon was Austin Lee, St Joseph’s, who finished in fourth place with 3,494 points. Best for the ladies was Ann Doyle, Gowran, who finished fifth in the heptathlon on 3,065 points. The gold medal was won by master athlete Pat Power. Competing in the over 50’s quadrathlon he scored 1,225 points to bring home the gold.
The “B” All-Ireland track and field championships were held in Tullamore in conjunction with the Multi-events. Two Gowran athletes were successful medal winners. Sinead Naddy won silver in the under 15 high jump and Keith Flavin won bronze in the 800m under 16. Other Kilkenny athletes who performed well without getting into the medals were Shane Power, St Joseph’s in the 600m under 13 and Aoibhe O’Shea, Kilkenny City Harriers in under 13 long jump and 600m.
