A drug addict who broke into Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey and his entrepreneur partner Sarah Newman’s home and stole credit cards has been given a two year sentence with the final year suspended at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
David McCormack (32 ) of Wolfe Tone Square in Bray was found guilty by a jury after a four-day trial in May of trespass and theft at Alma Road on March 13, 2008 and theft of €600 from Ms Newman’s bank account at Ulster Bank on Main Street in Blackrock.
Garda William Kavanagh told Mr John Quirke, BL, prosecuting, that CCTV footage from outside Mr Carey and Ms Newman’s house showed a man coming out of the property at around 6.15am.
The accused, who has 87 previous convictions, had broken into the house and stolen an AIB credit card and a mobile phone which contained the pin number to the credit card.
Gda Kavanagh said receipts belonging to Ms Newman’s credit card account were found at Seapoint Dart Station and CCTV footage showed a man climbing over a wall and onto a platform wearing distinctive top with a red rhino on the back.
“I also obtained CCTV footage from an ATM in Blackrock village which showed a man with a phone in his hand withdrawing cash from the machine. His face was clearly visible and his top had a red rhino on its back. I recognised the man from the locality,” said Gda Kavanagh.
Gda Kavanagh applied for a warrant to search the accused man’s home and located certain items including a top with a red rhino on it and a woolly Manchester United hat.
McCormack, who is a father of four and in a long-term relationship, did not cause any damage to the property at Alma Road.
“He has a drug problem and was on 120ml of methadone but is now on 45ml,” said defence counsel, Mr Patrick Reynolds BL.
Judge Patricia Ryan said, on handing down the sentence, that she has been advised he is addressing his drug problem.
