A bumper weekend of camogie in store

The Kilkenny senior camogie girls have had an excellent season so far, and their unlucky one-point defeat to Wexford in the national league final was their only loss of 2010.

Last year’s All-Ireland finalists are the only team in the O’Duffy Cup campaign with a 100 per cent record in the group stages of the round robin section, and before last Saturday’s game against Clare had already qualified directly for the last four.

They secured a 4-14 to 0-14 victory in Corofin last Saturday, and victory away to league champions in Wexford tomorrow will complete a perfect group campaign, and they will be in a buoyant mood ahead of their semi-final clash in Nowlan Park on August 14.

Cork, Galway and Wexford are the other semi-finalists, and the draw will be made this coming Monday, July 26.

Meanwhile, the minors continue their quest for five-in-a-row as they face Galway on Sunday in the All-Ireland minor semi-final. That will be a double header along with the Tipperary versus Clare semi-final.

Kilkenny defeated Galway 4-5 to 1-9 in the opening round of games in Athenry recently and can expect another tough battle on Sunday.

The All-Ireland minor final is scheduled for August 7. Also, there is a busy week of club action on Monday evening with senior and intermediate league semi-final action taking place, along with first round games in the senior and intermediate championships and a full round of games in the junior league.

Mullinavat who have been the form team so far face next-door neighbours Ballyhale Shamrocks in the league semi-final, while long-standing queens St Lachtains face Windgap.

The intermediate league semi-finals will be contested by Rower-Inistioge at home to Clara, and defending league champions Paulstown at home to Dicksboro.

In the more serious segment of knock-out action, Thomastown face St Brigids in Thomastown in a repeat of last year’s quarter-final clash that went to a replay.

St Martins should progress safely to the last eight with victory at home to St Annes.

In the intermediate section, the first two round games are Piltown at home to James Stephens and Lisdowney at home to Emeralds. While in the junior grade, Glenmore are at home to close neighbours Tullogher and this should be a rattling contest. Young Irelands (Gowran ) are at home to Carrickshock, while Tullaroan square up to Blacks and Whites with both teams having a 100 per cent record in the competition so far.

A hectic and intriguing evening of club action in store in what will be a bumper weekend of camogie.
