Number three seed, Andrew Harte, was the impressive winner of this year’s Senior Open Week singles which was sponsored by TigerTurf Tennis Court Construction. Only Eoghan O’Connor was able to take a set from Andrew as he went on to defeat Brian Murphy, Tommy Rochford (seed 2 ) and Simon Clarke (seed 1 ) to take the men’s title.
Mary Clare McCarthy justified her number one seeding in the ladies singles by not dropping a set on her way to the title — although local girl, Niamh Kennedy, put up a brave challenge in the final.
In the men’s doubles the unseeded pair of Andrew Harte/Brian Murphy eased their way into the final but were taken to three sets by Robert Cumins/Mick Prendergast (seed 2 ) in a closely fought final. Patty Briggs/Julie Ann Foley (seed 2 ) are the women’s doubles champions with Niamh Kennedy/Mary Claire McCarthy (seed 1 ) the other finalists. Julie Ann Foley had further success in the mixed doubles when she teamed up with Tommy Rochford to beat the partnership of Trudy Kennedy and Des Dillon. Local players that impressed in the tournament included Ailish Scott who won the women’s grade 4 singles while Christopher Helzel won the men’s Singles. Claire Roberts and Michael Lannon also won the mixed doubles in this Section. Tom Brennan defeated former Kilkenny player, Nicky Rossiter in grade 4 and Katherine Dee and Pat Brett survived two tie breakers to win the mixed doubles in Grade 5. Lucy Glendining won the ladies grade 6 singles and went on to partner Colin Shaw and win the mixed doubles.
Tennis aside it was a very enjoyable week in the club with good weather, live entertainment and beautiful food supplied by Blueberry.
Junior Open week 2010 will commence on Monday July 19 to Saturday, July 24. Play will commence at 11.15am each day. Draw will take place on Thursday 15th July. Order of play will be displayed in the club house (056 7765157 or 7752720 ) from Saturday July 17 at 2pm and daily thereafter on www.kilkennytennisclub.com
Daytime tournaments for junior members will be held throughout all July and August on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2-5pm. Entry is €2.
