Kilkenny Parade project in Irish Architecture Awards shortlist

Kilkenny’s controversial Parade project has been shortlisted for a prestigious architecture award.

Kilkenny County Council is thrilled that the urban landscaping surrounding the castle and the entrance to the castle is being considered in the shortlist for such a distinguished award.

The Kilkenny project is among the 55 projects on the shortlist for this year’s Irish Architecture Awards, which was recently announced by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI ).

The Kilkenny Project, entitled ‘Common Ground’ was designed by GKMP Architects Ltd and was completed last year.

John Mulholland, director of services at Kilkenny County Council, said that he was thrilled at the news of the project’s shortlisting.

“We have got much praise about the success of this project and we are very proud of the finished product. The Parade is now a lovely, urban, public space where people can meet and sit and take in the city of Kilkenny. It is very worthy of the nomination and we are very pleased at the announcement this week,” he said.

However, most of the general public are happy to have a place of quality urban landscaping in the centre of the city.

The Parade was shortlisted for ‘the reconfiguration of the urban spaces around Kilkenny Castle which is a constructed landscape; it makes background rather than building-as-object’.

The winners will be announced and presented with their awards on the evening of Monday June 21 in the Farmleigh Gallery, where Miriam O’Callaghan will be the host and MC.
