Gaelscoil celebrates quarter of a century

Students and staff past and present gathered in Hotel Kilkenny last Friday night at a gala event to celebrate Gaelscoil Osrai’s 25th anniversary.

Among the nearly 200 guests were a number of members of the school’s first class from 1984, as well as most of the school’s founding committee and the event was hosted by proud ex-pupil and RTÉ sports broadcaster Evanne Ní Chuilinn alongside legendary commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.

The day began with an anniversary mass celebrated in the school by chaplain Fr Liam Taylor, followed by a concert in the school hall featuring all of the school’s present 466 pupils.

Gaelscoil Osrai has grown from it’s humble beginnings as 23 students in James Stephens’ GAA clubhouse to become the second largest gaelscoil in the country.

Mícheál Ó Máirtín, who served as principal of the school for 21 years until his retirement in 2008, spoke of his fond memories of the school and current principal, Seán Ó hArgáin praised the consistent standard of excellence the school had provided through the years.

He also praised the wonderful efforts of the organising committee, made up of current teachers Máire Ruth Puirséil, Cáit Nic Aonghusa and Niamh de Buitléir along with enthusiastic parents Áine McGrath and Caroline Fogarty.
