Appeals against Aldi store withdrawn

Aldi looks likely to move ahead with plans for its first Kilkenny store following the recent withdrawal of an appeal to An Bord Pleanala.

Kilkenny County Council granted Aldi Stores planning permission for the first phase of of a mixed use development involving a discount foodstore in the city in December last year.

The proposed store is to be located at the junction of the Waterford Road, Bohernatounish Road and Nuncio Road, directly opposite rivals Lidl’s exisiting store.

The council’s decision was later appealed to An Bord Pleanala in January of this year with submissions from a local residents’ group, the Cashel Downs Residents Association, and Liam Barneville.

However both parties have now withdrawn their appeals unconditionally, paving the way for Aldi’s first discount store in the county. Aldi were recently refused permission for a store in Callan by An Bord Pleanala.

The planning permission for the store in Kilkenny city involves the construction of a single-storey discount foodstore with associated illuminated signs and parking. The development is also expected to include a roundabout which will be partially on-site.

The site, which is currently vacant, is in an area zoned as residential in the 2008 Kilkenny city and environs development plan, and Aldi have indicated the second phase of the development will consist of a residential building and a medical centre.
