Maher and Richardson win Stoneyford 10K

The inaugural Stoneyford 10K held on the Stoneyford/Kells circuit was hailed as a great success by the organisers. Held on Sunday under the blazing midday sun it also proved successful for Kilkenny City Harriers duo, Brian Maher and Niamh Richardson. Brian moved away from the pack at the start and had a lead of some four minutes at the finish.

Niamh was the first lady to cross the finish line making it a double win for the city club. The previous Sunday Brian had another good run in the Annual Sportsworld Five Mile Classic in Dublin. Finishing the course in 24 minutes 36 seconds he finished in second place some thirty seconds behind winner, Joe Sweeney. Last year’s winner, Sergiu Cibanu, was third.

Harriers to retain Hehir Shield

Kilkenny athletic clubs had a strong presence at the Leinster Inter-club relays held in the Shoreline Sports Park in Greystones, CO Wicklow on Sunday. Kilkenny City Harriers (KCH ) came away with twenty-four points from the competition and look set to retain, for the third successive year, the Hehir Shield - the overall trophy for this competition.

Eleven teams from the club finished in the medals. Five won gold – the 4x100m teams in girls under 14, under 16, under 17 and the boys team under 14, and the 4x400m girls under 19; three won silver – the 4x100m girls under 11, girls under 13 and girls under 19; and three bronze – the 4x100m girls under 10, boys under 18 and the 4x400m boys under 18. An unfortunate fall, just meters from the finish line, by the anchorman in the final of the boys under 12 relay deprived the city club of another second place finish. One of the most exciting races of the day was the final of the boys under 14 relay with KCH just pipping Aughavillar at the line. Aughavillar added another set of silver medals with the under 10 4x100m girls team. The Aughavillar club also had two third places with girls under 13 and boys under 16. Two further sets of silver medals went south to the St Joseph’s club. These were won by the under 18 boys with second place in the 4x100m and 4x400m.
