Camogie Congress votes on Go Games and E-Voting

A special Camogie congress took place in sweltering sunshine in Croke Park last Saturday and a number of issues were up for discussion. The most major development to have occurred was that the Camogie association has voted overwhelmingly in favour of the ‘Go Games’ model where all counties will be participating.

All counties will ensure that games for 12s and under will be organised under the ‘Go Games’ model, and they will be played as 11-a-side games with participants involved in a full game. President of the Camogie association Joan O’Flynn has welcomed the development encouraging juveniles to prioritise competing rather than winning.

“It’s a major and welcome step forward for the game of Camogie and we’ll ensure that correct procedures are put in place for the Camogie association that continues to thrive and develop. We’re adapting the Go Games model that will hopefully attract youngsters to the sport. It’s the participation of young girls rather than the competitive nature that will contribute further to enhancing the skills of Camogie”. Another motion passed was the introduction of E-voting to vote on a new Camogie institution. All recommendations were passed apart from the rule of team-lists at throw-in and rules governing suspensions were refereed to Ard-Chomhairle following a 50-50 split. Some motions come into effect from Monday, June 21, while the remaining motions will transpire from January 2011. Also another significant motion that was passed was the new name of ‘Camogie Association’. That means the title of Cumann Camogaiochta na nGael has been changed to ‘Camogie Association’. Following a survey in 2008-2009, Association members found the rule book difficult to follow, and a strategic review implementation will be established to devise draft rules.
