This summer Barnstorm will once again be running its hugely popular theatre week for young people and children. For those aged 10 to 18, Barnstorm’s Summer Days will provide an intensive and fun exploration of theatre and drama, and afford a real opportunity to develop theatre skills and develop self confidence. It is open to all in the age groups, no experience is necessary.
Summer Days will take place over two weeks in July. From July 5 – 9 the morning sessions will cater for eight to 10 year olds and the afternoon will cater for 12-14 year olds. From July 12 -16 the morning sessions will be for 10-12 year olds and the afternoon session will be for 14-18 year olds.
Each group will work towards a short performance that they can share with family and friends on the last day. So during the week they will look at the skills needed in creating and performing a piece of theatre including acting, voice, devising, and improvisation. The workshops will also encourage the development of confidence and social skills. All the sessions will be delivered knowing it’s the summer holidays so enjoyment and fun will also be high on the agenda.
The sessions will be led by Barnstorm’s youth drama professionals Anna Galligan and Ronan Mac Raois and will take place in Barnstorm’s rehearsal and performance space The Barn.
“Because of previous successful summer and youth theatre programmes, we have decided to widen the age groups this year. There will be four groups, so a busy and exciting time will be had at The Barn.
“All the work will be particular to the age groups and individuals involved so it’s a great chance to try something new or to improve on stuff you already know about making theatre and doing drama” said Anna Galligan, Barnstorm’s outreach officer. “Also there is something very exciting and invigorating about creating a piece of theatre in a week – it can be hard work but also great fun.”
This is also a great opportunity for those considering joining Kilkenny Youth Theatre in September to get a taste of what goes on in the different youth theatre groups. Barnstorm is launching a third youth theatre group this year. The age groups will be 10-12 years, 12-14 years, and 14-18 years.
