Enjoy jazz, swing, and soul for charity

A speakeasy charity jazz night in aid of the Kilkenny branch of the Irish Society for Autism and The Susie Long Hospice Fund will be held on Thursday May 27 next.

Music on the night will be provided by The Stargazers, Rubber Soul, and The Swingin’ Bluecats at the Left Bank bar on the Parade.

The three bands will be each playing in separate areas of the popular bar with DJ Cleveland Mike rounding off the evening with a dynamic set.

Bar manager of Left Bank, Noel Lane, in promoting the charity jazz night said: “I would encourage all jazz and music fans to support this fantastic night’s entertainment. We have a great line up and are delighted to help two local, hardworking, charities.”

Entertainment will commence at 9pm with eighties group The Stargazers taking to the stage downstairs. This popular group is made up of Cork rebels Johnny Fang, Chris Ahern, and Johnny Campbell. After an encouraging response to a once off, show-stopping, gig in March 2009 at Blackrock Castle Observatory, the group re-formed. Their guaranteed ‘feel good’ music will bring the house down and their soothing blend of folk, rock, and acoustic jazz along with amazing flowing lyrics, will capture your heart.

Suited and booted in forties’ retro style royal blue zoot suits, The Swingin' Bluecats are set to perform a mix of jump, jive, and swing in Louie’s Backyard. This band specialises in the type of music that kick-started the retro swing movement in the nineties. They have wowed crowds at many prestigious events and venues including The Guinness Jazz Festival, The Sugar Club, and The Can Can Casino. The band is firmly focused on delivering the finest in jump, jive, and swing.

Rubber Soul, a popular Waterford based group, famous for their spectacular brass section, will perform hits from the sixties, seventies, and eighties upstairs. Rubber Soul have been very much in demand this past year with gigs in London and throughout Ireland. Their high energy performance will have everyone on their feet with an eclectic mix of funk chops, ska, and soul.

There are two worthy charities that will benefit from this great evening’s entertainment. The Irish Society for Autism was formed with the goal of creating awareness of autism and convincing the authorities that early diagnosis and specialised education would greatly enhance the quality of life for people with autism. Funds raised on the night will also help The Susie Long Hospice Fund which is run by a voluntary committee based in Kilkenny. Their aim is to provide the highest possible quality of end-of-life care for patients and their families through the establishment of a 10-bed hospice in Kilkenny.

Tickets are €10 and are available from Left Bank and reception at The Hibernian Hotel.
