The 1st and 2nd class pupils from the Kilkenny School Project on the Waterford road recently took part in the Keep Kilkenny Beautiful initiative to combat the county’s litter problem.
The fun initiative called Bainisteoir Bruscair ( literally meaning Litter Manager ) involves the kids finding five adults to be on their own litter-busting team.
Each adult that takes part has to commit to not to drop any litter this year. Local community activist and KKB committee member, Mick Greene visited the school and was delighted with the response the initiative received.
"The approach of adults telling kids not to litter has had limited success, so this year we are getting the kids to teach the adults. The kids are totally committed to the project. They are totally tuned into the team mentality that is required if we want to win the Tidy Towns All Ireland Title in 2010. It bodes well for the future. I pity the adult who reneges on their promise to their 'litter-manager.”
In return for their efforts, each class received a certificate of participation and the individual children are in with a chance of prizes to be awarded later in the year by our very own senior county hurling bainisteor, Brian Cody.
