Duiske Abbey, Graiguenamanagh, will be the venue for the Wexford Sinfonia’s summer concert on Sunday May 16 at 8pm. This awe-inspiring medieval building will be the perfect setting for the evening of baroque and early classical music, which will be performed by the orchestra. The conductor will be Fergus Sheil.
The concert will open with the exhilarating dance tunes and colourful sonorities of Handel’s Water Music. This will be followed by the hauntingly beautiful Bach solo voice Cantata No. 82, “Ich habe genung.” The soloist for this will be renowned Wexford baritone, John Dempsey and the obligato oboe will be played by Tom Burke of the Dublin Baroque Players. Mozart’s plaintive Maurerische Trauermusik will bring the first half of the concert to a close.
After the interval the orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No.1 in C. with its delightful melodies and rich instrumentation, written when Beethoven had reached full artistic maturity, and was at the height of his classical power.
The Wexford Sinfonia is a symphony orchestra, which was founded sixteen years ago, and which plays works from the standard orchestral repertoire.
The players perform four concerts every year, two in the summer and two in the winter, for which they prepare two programmes.
Tickets at €15 (Students £10 ) are available at the door or by ringing 087 6260889.
