South-east students get tuned in to radio broadcast course

Headphones on? Mic open? Now it’s over to you….

That was the message given to the latest batch of successful participants from the BEAT 102 103 / WLR Waterford Institute of Technology radio broadcasting course for 2010 as they completed their final session last week.

Having run over 10 weeks, the course, designed and developed in 2006 as a joint effort by both stations, featured 12 people from across the south-east who received invaluable experience over the course duration on the medium that is radio broadcasting.

The course aims to give participants a full and in-depth understanding of the critical areas of radio broadcasting. Areas covered include the history of the radio industry in Ireland, music and speech presentation, digital editing techniques, radio journalism, radio commercial production, programming and music policy.

Both BEAT 102-103 and WLR FM pride themselves on employing local people and these courses are perfect starting blocks for interested people to get some hands-on radio experience.

“This year again we have seen a talented group of individuals with huge potential. I’d like to say a big thank you to all the team here at the broadcast centre and a big well done to all the students who completed the course this year,” said Leigh Doyle, course coordinator of BEAT 102-103.

Leigh added, “this year saw a group of individuals with a natural flare for radio, taking part in the course.”
