Councillor Catherine Connery has called on Kilkenny County Council, Bus Eireann and bus operators, to put in place proper bus shelters in Ballyragget, Freshford, Muckalee, and in other villages and rural areas around the county to facilitate students and other public-transport users.
The Fine Gael Councillor said that students, who leave home very early in the morning, frequently get wet while waiting for school buses.
“They have to then attend school in wet clothes and not return home until late evening”, she added. “In this era of progress and prosperity, it is unacceptable that anyone, particularly the elderly and students should have to await public transport and school buses without shelters.
“Added to the immediate consequences for those waiting for buses there are also long-term health issues resulting from constant exposure to bad weather.”
