Gardai are investigating the cause of a road traffic accident in which a woman was fatally injured over the weekend.
33 year old Renata Ferenezova of Freron Court, Kilkenny died when the car in which she was a passenger, was in collision on the main Kilkenny to Clonmel Road at Kilsheelanon the N76. The accident happened at 10.30am on Saturday morning last, October 4.
There were no other vehicles involved in the incident. The driver of the car, a man also in his forties, was seriously injured and was taken to Clonmel Hospital for treatment while another passenger, a nine-year-old boy, escaped injury.
The road was closed for several hours following the accident and diversions were in place while Gardai carried out a forensic examination of the scene.
The latest fatalities bring to 226 the number of people who have perished on our roads since the beginning of the year. This is 28 fewer than the number recorded this time last year.
Although it is only seven days into October, the seven deaths already represent over a third of the total deaths on the roads in September.
Statistics show that 2008 has recorded the lowest amount of deaths for the first nine months in a year since records began in 1961.
