Skaters help to keep Kilkenny beautiful

A group of young Kilkenny skaters have been doing their bit in the bid to clean up the city by collecting bags of rubbish from the streets last weekend.

Urban Sports Kilkenny is a local club that was set up to develop and support skating, rollerblading and scooting in Kilkenny.

Its members include local teenagers and young adults who are not only interested in all things skating but are intent on making a positive contribution to their community.

Shortly after this group was established, they contacted Keep Kilkenny Beautiful and offered their time and energy in preparing Kilkenny for this year’s Tidy Towns Competition. And last Saturday morning, several members of the group met on the ring road and picked 20 large sacks of rubbish. “The drive for this initiative came from the club members,” said Mick Greene, spokesperson and co-founder of the club. “Skaters have been treated quite harshly for years in Kilkenny and they are keen to prove that they are a decent bunch of young people.”

The group intends to be involved in further community projects over the coming months. They have a busy schedule with trips to skate-parks around the country planned, a local skating demonstration which is taking place soon and a large-scale professional skating event to take place during the summer.

Urban Sports Kilkenny also acts as a youth club and provides advice and support for both members and other teenagers and young adults. It is the first such club in the country that provides both the sporting and youth club elements together. “Urban Sports Kilkenny is a hard working and dedicated bunch of local people who want to add and contribute positively to Kilkenny life and develop skating in Kilkenny city and county,” Mr Greene added.

The club is constantly looking for new members, and anyone interested in joining should contact Mick Greene on 085 1668149 or email info@mickgreene.ie
