First All-Ireland badminton title for Kilkenny College

The Kilkenny College under 19 badminton team were recently crowned All-Ireland Champions having made it through to the finals from their victorious Leinster Championship campaign.

The college faced the winners of each province in a league format. They beat Munster champions Bandon in their first game, they then went on to draw with Coleraine, with all matches being very closely contested.

Their last match against Westport was vital as was the result between the Bandon v Coleraine game. All went in favour of the Kilkenny side winning 4 /2 in their match and with Bandon defeating the Ulster side, Kilkenny College emerged champions. This was the first boys team from Kilkenny to ever reach the All-Irelands and to win on their first attempt was fantastic. Coach Heather Sharman said: “ the boys played brilliantly and they kept their nerve with such tight scorelines in all their matches, they were a credit to the school.”

Squad: Roy Connor, Leon Coe, Trevor Watchorn, Daryl James and Robert Bennett.
