Vaughan exhibiton at Butler Gallery

An exhibition of paintings entitled Time Place Memory by Kilkenny based artist George Vaughan is being presented in The Butler Gallery until April 18.

George Vaughan is a well respected painter and educator who has been painting for over 40 years. The collection includes a range of abstract expressionist paintings and marks an important step for Vaughan as they possess a spontaneity and fluidity of movement that breaks away from any kind of categorisation. Vaughan also draws on the tension between organic and inorganic forms. His paintings are born from a particular experience or specific place.

In certain places in the paintings the paint is applied heavily while at other times the paint is lucidly translucent.

Throughout his work there is an apparent respect for the cycle of nature, demonstrating where there is death and decay there is also growth and life. A committed gardener himself he watches his garden rest in winter and flourish in spring.

Vaughan continues to teach part-time but has achieved much since returning to longer periods in the studios. He is currently producing the best paintings of his career and his next paintings will be eagerly awaited over the next decade.

George Vaughan was born in Limerick in 1941 and lived there until he was 27. He studied at the Limerick School of Art, the National College of Art, Dublin, Fischerkoesen Film Studios in Germany and the College of Music, Dublin. He has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions and his work can be found in collections such as The Arts Council of Ireland, Office of Public Works, Butler Gallery, Limerick city and private collections in Ireland and abroad. He currently lives in Thomastown, County Kilkenny and was course director of the Grennan Mill Craft school for almost 30 years.
