Veterans to hold Kilkenny parade

The Veterans of the Island of Ireland Association will hold a parade in Kilkenny city on Wednesday, April 10.

The association plan to form at Kilkenny Castle at 13.30pm to dedicate their new ‘standard’ with a short service, which will be followed by a march through the town.

The march will be led by the Kilkenny City and District Pipe Band, taking the salute at the Tholsel and dismissing at Kyteler’s Inn.

Mayor Malcolm Noonan will take the salute at the Tholsel along with Major General David The O’Morchoe CB CBE while the officiating clergy will be Rev Elaine Murray, Father Jim Murphy and Canon Tom Sherlock.

The day is significant for the veterans as an all-island group aiming to foster their aims and principles of comradeship which are non-religious, non-political and non-sectarian, allowing each member to be their own person.

The association recruits soldiers who have served in a legal army throughout the world to promote peace and harmony with their motto, ‘there are no strangers in a hall full of soldiers, there are just old friends who have never met’.
