Under 15 Inter League
Wexford 3, Kilkenny 1
An early goal from Kilkenny's Pat Shaw looked like it had opened the floodgates for an easy win for the home side. They continued to surge forward time after time and created a handful of chances which they let pass by.
But those misses were to cost them dearly when the Kilkenny defence and midfield forgot all about defending. The first serious Wexford attack saw Timmy Dwyer completely free in the penalty area to take all the time he needed to slip the ball past the home keeper. Before Kilkenny had a chance to recover from the shock they found themselves a goal in arrears when Dwyer again found himself with an easy task of scoring having been left alone in the Kilkenny penalty area. He made no mistake and the Wexford supporters seemed stunned with the sudden turn-around. But better was to follow, as Wexford pushed forward this time their captain Alan Rhodes rounded past all the defenders on the home side to beat the keeper from close range. At this stage Kilkenny seemed pleased to hear the half time whistle and must have hoped for some inspiration during the interval. It was not to be. Kilkenny huffed and puffed for the whole second period but made no progress against Wexford who defended manfully. Mickey Drennan and Andy Hickey tried as hard as they could to create something but too many times good work was ruined with a poor end product. While the Kilkenny team could not be faulted for their effort they allowed an ordinary Wexford team too much room throughout the pitch. For Wexford, Alan Rhodes and Timmy Dwyer worked hard and took full advantage of a poor Kilkenny performance to ensure Wexford’s victory. The Kilkenny side will have to work on their defence ahead of the next round.
