Limbik Theatre, a UK based theatre company who were last in Kilkenny performing their show ‘The Harbour’, are to return to facilitate a series of training workshops for local actors and directors.

The workshops will provide an excellent opportunity for theatre enthusiasts to pick up some of the principles at the heart of physical theatre. The series, entitled ‘Playing Space’, will run for two days, in association with Barnstorm Theatre in Kilkenny.

“There is such an active theatre scene here, with huge support from the community,” said Limbik's Ben Samuels, who has been in Kilkenny working as an actor-musician on Barnstorm's acclaimed production, ‘Boy With a Suitcase’.

“We wanted to try and pass on some of the tools and techniques that we use when creating our own work.”

Drawing on the pedagogy of the legendary French theatre teacher, Jacques Lecoq, the two days of workshops are an introduction to making theatre that communicates beyond the spoken text.

Through the use of images and action, they aim to begin an exploration of theatre that is fully, visually alive. They will explore the relationship between actors and space, and the ways in which actors communicate simply through how they cross the stage, or pick up a teacup.

Day one, Saturday March 6, will investigate the physicality of dramatic forces - the pushes and pulls we experience in every human encounter - and how these forces inform the relationships between characters.

Day two, Saturday March 13, focuses exclusively on the use of full character masks, researching over the course of the day how playing a mask informs the actor's physicality, rhythm, specificity, and spatial awareness.

Limbik creates new theatre work that explores human stories set in epic environments, focusing on the intersection of innovative theatrical style with strong narrative craft.

Ben Samuels and Sarah Johnson, two of the company's founding members, trained at the London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA ) and Brown University and Edinburgh University, respectively.

Participants will have the option of taking individual days, or both. The cost of the workshops is €50 per day (€30 students unwaged ), with a 10 percent discount available for booking both days.

Places are limited and nearly sold out so reserve a place by contacting Barnstorm Theatre Company on 056-7751266 or email trish@barnstorm.ie.hops for local actors and directors.
