E(MOTION ) — Katja Wittmer’s recent work deals with the motion of emotion; a visual journey which shows how emotions influence our perception, always changing, unpredictable, always in motion.
Her work is currently being exhibited at the Upstairs Gallery at the Watergate Theatre until Friday, March 19.
In her work, the artist emphasises the hidden, the subtle, the profound — the importance of the actual depicted scene fades — by using intense colours, scattering textures and dripping paint, she creates conscious abstractions that encourage a subtle, colour geared stimulation of personal associations and emotions. Her work aims at altering the awareness of the individual’s emotional consciousness through conceptual dialogue with the physical painting.
Katja’s art deals with looking behind the scenes and exploring the emotional abyss. She shows the complex facets of humankind— highs and lows, light and shadow, beauty and distortion, love and hate.
Born in 1972 in Germany, Katja Wittmer grew up in Munich, Brazil and the USA. She graduated from Auburn University (USA ) with a cum laude degree in Fine Arts in 1997. She has travelled the world extensively since then, before coming to Ireland in 2007. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including New York, Manila, Hong Kong, Vienna, Munich and Mumbai. In 2008 Katja Wittmer was an artist-in-residence at the Custom House Studios in Westport, and is currently based in the Tulla Stables Studios in Co Clare.
