Next week will see local theatre group KATS return to the stage with a series of one-act plays to take place one after the other in Cleere’s Theatre for a four night stand.
Directors Declan Taylor, Alan Grant, and John Whitely will provide audiences with a wonderful night of entertainment, with each play in the series set to proffer a different style and emotional context.
First up, The Insanity of Mary Girard, directed by Declan Taylor and written by Lilly Robertson, is a dark and dramatic performance which tells the tale of a housewife who finds herself incarcerated in a psychiatric hospital where she is taunted by her own thoughts in her solitary cell and driven to insanity.
Set in a time where women’s rights are disregarded and suspicion is rampant, director Declan Taylor believes the story challenges the cast as well as providing a full sensory experience for the audience.
Next is the more amorous and seductive, The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish, the passionate worlds-colliding tale of suave socialite/politician Henry Smith, his dull wife Alice, and handsome French waiter Michel.
Directed by Alan Grant, this play blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, moving at a fast pace and providing side-splitting comedy moments.
And last but not least comes the latest offering from local director and playwright, John Whitely, A Step In The Right. This follows two previous one-act plays for KATS, Take Your Point and Man Friday.
The play follows a small amateur drama group in the fictional town of Ballystak, where widower Damien fights to hold onto his last social outlet as an underlying tone of sadness punctuates the humorous elements of the story.
The three plays will take place in Cleere’s Theatre, Kilkenny, from next Wednesday, March 10 to Saturday 13. Tickets are €10, bookings from (056 ) 77 71666. La Revista restaurant, sponsor of the shows, is offering a three course pre-theatre dinner for two with a bottle of wine for €50.
