Kilquan Players to stage The Whip Hand at Coon Hall

The Kilquan Players theatre group based in Coon, Co Kilkenny are about to stage their 17th annual production.

This year they are putting on The Whip Hand which is a comedy play by BG MacCarthy set in 1940s Ireland. The Kilkenny Advertiser caught up with Thomas Brennan who plays Dr Larry Fogarty in the play to find out what it’s all about.

“The story is funny but within a serious setting. It is set in 1940s rural Ireland. As times are hard a widow in the village puts her son up for marriage and is hoping to pair him with a rich woman so she can avail of a handsome dowry. However her son is unwilling as he is in love with a local girl who doesn’t have much money.”

But it’s not all about romance and Mr Brennan is certain the production will encourage plenty of laughter from the audience.

“It’s an old comedy and a well respected play and with the intimate setting of the hall people will enjoy every moment from an excellent seat.”

The cast is made up of 20 people with 10 lead roles played by Patsy Darcy, Anne Tunstead, Mark Haughney, Maria Purcell, Frances Sweeney, Gordon Watchorn, Thomas Brennan, Maggie Cooney, Willie Joe Meally, and Michael Somers. The production is directed by local man Michael Casey.

Mr Brennan is also looking for people to help out.

“We are looking for people who’d like to get involved in any capacity we would be delighted if they could volunteer their time.”

The Whip Hand goes on stage on February 19, and runs until February 21, at 8pm at Coon Hall. Bookings can be made by contacting Thomas Brennan on 087 2228911. Admission costs €10 and part of the proceeds will go towards local charities and local groups.
