Tennis

Despite the current poor weather there are 100 entrants for this year’s Frostbite League which will take place over the next five weeks.

There was a great interest shown by the womenin this year’s competition with almost all of the top players competing and promising to make the ladies A section. The pairings of Dorrie Lenehan / Ita Maddigan, Grainne Parker/Mary Nolan or Gillian Grant/Ailish Scott could take this section.

The ladies B section has over twenty entrants and could be won by any of the following four pairings, Nicky Reid/Bernie Halpin, Tina O’Connor/Cathy Crowley, Ann Quinlan/Helen Connelly or Helen Fitzgerald/Deirdre Coyne. The C section should be between Deidre O’ Neill/Joan Dunne and Anne Goughagan/Sheila O’Mahony. The ladies D section has new talent so only time will tell. The men’s A section is a mixture of experience at this level and fast improvers who progressed through the grades in recent years. If experience should shine then Trevor Darlington and Robert Cummins will dominate the section. However don’t rule out the up-coming talent of Liam O’Connor and Michael Lannon. The men’s B section is very crowded with many possible winners but the pairings of Niall O’Connor/Paul O’Dwyer, Ed Fennelly/Howard Triggs, Tom Nolan/Kevin Cleary and Brian Fennelly/Paul Tallis are the main contenders.

The men’s D section should be a two horse race between Sean Donnelly/George Maher and Tom Meany/Steve Bell. This year’s tournament is again sponsored by Young Motors. Last Friday’s American Tournament was well attended and the winners were Mary Ryan and Heather Hogan with the runners up being Sean Donnelly and Lil Downey. Those interested in next Friday’s tournament should contact Brian Doyle on 086-8714941 before 7pm on Friday.
