King Henry to join Marathon Challenge in Kilkenny

The momentum behind the 32 County Challenge fundraising event in aid of Irish Autism Action is building rapidly and Kilkenny people are getting fit in order to take part.

This July and August Gerry Duffy and Ken Whitelaw will run 32 marathons in 32 consecutive days in the 32 counties of Ireland to raise money for this worthy charity.

The run in Kilkenny will take place on Wednesday, July 7, 2010. and already 300 runners have signed up from around the country to participate. And Kilkenny’s favourite hurling star Henry Shefflin will also be running alongside Ken and Gerry.

“The challenge will be tough but myself and Ken are ready to take it on,” said Gerry Duffy.

“This is a great cause and we are determined to succeed and raise as much money as possible for Irish Autism Action. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to run a marathon in your home county and we’re encouraging people to come along and run with us in their local area.”

A number of high profile celebrities have come on board to lend their support including Eamon Coughlan, Darragh Ó Sé, and Bernard Flynn by acting as a race starter in different counties. In fact, some celebrities such as Keith Duffy, Norman Williamson, and Charmain Kenny (the Rose of Tralee ) have said they will join Gerry and Ken by running a number of miles with them along the way. Keith Duffy and Brian Kennedy have agreed to run the entire 26.2 miles in Dublin, the first leg of this amazing challenge.

Kevin Whelan, chief executive officer for Irish Autism Action, said: “We are thrilled that the lads have decided to take on this challenge in aid of our charity. It will be a fantastic achievement for all the runners involved and we will be encouraging communities nationwide to get behind the lads and support them. Whether that be through running along with Gerry and Ken or giving them a cup of water to revive them on their way.” Gerry and Ken want to be joined by 32 different runners each day as they run around Ireland. The one exception is Dublin where they hope to be joined by 132 runners. For those who don't feel up to the full 26.2 miles, there will be a half marathon option each day.

Runners who sign up for a full marathon must raise €1,000 whereas a runner tackling the half marathon distance must raise €600. Celebrities already signed up to support the challenge are John Treacy, Eamon Coughlan, Darragh Ó Sé, Tommy Carr, and Mick Galwey. To register log onto www.32marathons.com.
