Lives at risk at bridge crossing

Labour party councillor Sean O’ hArgáin has once again called for the pedestrian crossing at Greensbridge in Kilkenny to be removed and relocated to a safer spot.

Speaking at this month’s meeting of Kilkenny Borough Council, Cllr O’ hArgáin said, “somebody will be killed at that crossing. It needs to be moved. Maybe the council would consider erecting traffic lights at the crossing on a temporary basis,” he added.

Senior engineer, Kieran Fitgerald told the members that an assessment of the issues at the pedestrian crossing in question had been undertaken by the council. He said that traffic lights are not the solution and would only make the situation worse in terms of traffic congestion.

“This crossing has been assessed several times,” he added.

“It is difficult to see where the correct place for the location of a pedestrian crossing is as there is no footpath on the Nore Bar side of the road - although there is a case for putting a footpath there. It is possible that Greensbridge would be down to one lane traffic however, as there are other issues in the area also to be addressed,” he concluded.
