A new year has begun and with it comes resolutions which inevitably include the ‘giving up’ mantra but what’s to stop you ‘taking up’ a few fun and interesting sports or hobbies too?
This year, instead of constant promises to yourself, just do it, start learning that language, get involved in local groups, fitness, or sports clubs, or simply explore the beautiful landscape, town, and villages that are right on our doorstep.
Kilkenny is jam-packed with classes which provide the most common options of French, Irish, Italian, and Spanish. Of course the choice of which language to take up depends on your own personal needs and preferences - you might want to brush up on the French long ago left on the Leaving Cert back burner, there may be a trip that requires a few words of Spanish, or maybe you just want to learn something a bit different and meet people at the same time.
There are so many hobbies out there to suit everyone. Lately, there’s been a resurgence in martial arts for both adults and kids - don’t knock until you’ve tried it - this is an excellent form of exercise and also offers confidence with self defence.
There are also classes for those interested in Irish dancing, but if that’s not your thing then don’t fret there are plenty of other dance options which include salsa, swing, or dance to keep fit.
Exercise classes are another great way to keep fit and meet people. There is everything from aerobics based classes to relaxing yoga. For the more adventurous there is kick-boxing, horse riding, or tag-rugby.
An investment in a pair of hiking boots or a bicycle is another great idea. Kilkenny people are really spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful scenery but unfortunately we often take it for granted. Make it your resolution that if you are bored at the weekends then go for a spin on your bike or take a wander through the many walking trails scattered throughout the county. You don’t have to be a tourist to appreciate natural beauty.
