Maher makes his mark
James Maher, KCH, made his mark on the international scene with a fine run in the International Cross-country at The Greenmount Campus in Antrim on Saturday last. James, not yet 15 years of age, competing with over sixty runners in the under 17 event, finished in a very creditable 14th place and was third scorer on the Irish team.
Gold and silver for Mary Kate
Nenagh Olympic hosted a double billing in their indoor stadium last weekend. On Saturday they hosted the AAI Junior Indoor Championships and on Sunday it was the turn of the Senior AAI Games.
Mary Kate Lanigan, Kilkenny City Harriers, was involved in the high jump in both competitions and clearing the same height, 1.65 metres, won gold in the Junior on Saturday and silver in the AAI Games on Sunday. She also had a good run in the Junior 400m where she clocked 61.12 seconds. Also involved in the 400m were club-mates Michael Lanigan and Ian Boland both of whom had quality times of 55.7 and 59.01 respectively. David McGeary cleared 5.35 in the long jump and finished the 60m sprint in 7.8 seconds. Laura Langton, also competing in the Junior Championships had times of 8.32 for the 60m and 27.13 for the 200m. Peter Walsh had an excellent competition to come fifth in the shot put with a throw of 12.32 metres. Gowran Juniors, Shaun McCormack and Sophie Parkinson, got their season off to a good start. Shaun was fifth in the 1500m (4.45.65 ) and Sophie was seventh in the shot putt (8.96 ). Eoin Muldowney, Castlecomer, competed in two events in the AAI Games on Sunday. He won silver in the 200m with a time of 23.23 seconds and did the 60m sprint in 7.32 seconds.
Stars celebrate in Carlow
Athletes from around the province, together with their families, friends and coaches flocked to Carlow on Saturday night for the Leinster Star Awards.
Kilkenny Stars, rewarded for their achievements during 2009 were Austin Lee, St Joseph’s, Senior Star: Laura Langton, Kilkenny City Harriers, Juvenile Girl Star and Jack Saunders, St Joseph’s, Juvenile Boy Star. Ed Williams, St Senan’s, founder member of the club in 1977 and long-time coach and official was presented with the Outstanding Service Award. County Kilkenny placed third in the Foley Cup competition for cross-country. The Hehir Shield for best relay club in Leinster was retained by Kilkenny City Harriers. The city club also had three second placings – The Eurotab Cup (under16-19 track and field ): Senior track and field and The Byrne Cup (Indoor competition ).
AGM
It’s that time of year again when rank and file members get an opportunity to express their views and vote in the officers for the coming year.
The county athletic board holds its AGM in the Club House hotel, Patrick Street, Kilkenny on Friday commencing at 7.30pm.
