Urgent action needed to tackle alcohol abuse by Irish youth- Aylward

Liam Aylward, MEP has called on the European Commission to do more to educate and raise awareness among young people concerning the impact of harmful alcohol consumption.

"The EU strategy to support member states in reducing alcohol-related harm has been operational for a number of years but what measurable progress has been made regarding the priorities of the strategy?

Young people, children and the unborn all suffer from alcohol abuse. We are seeing more and more injuries and deaths from alcohol-related road traffic accidents, but drinking still remains the favourite pastime of Irish youth."

"Every weekend the dramatic and devastating effects of alcohol abuse are visible in our hospital emergency rooms and on our streets. More must be done to develop information systems and programmes to reduce alcohol related harm. The EU has a vital role to play in this battle through informing, educating and raising awareness regarding the impact of harmful and hazardous alcohol consumption and regarding appropriate consumption patterns,”concluded Mr Aylward.
