A group of Kilkenny volunteers are setting out for Kenya in Africa this weekend where they plan to build a a secondary school/ training centre in the city of Mombasa with the Building of Hope project.
The Kilkenny volunteers will fly from Shannon to Nairobi today (Friday ) and will begin 10 days of hard labour when they arrive in Mombasa.
Already 40,000 blocks have been pre-made and are awaiting the arrival of the troops which consists of 200 people in all.
The volunteers are working over the next couple of months in two week stints in a bid to complete the building in record time.
After the foundations are laid, the block layers are the first team to offer their services. The work on the building will continue with the services of electrician, carpenters, plumbers, plasterers as the phases are completed.
It is hoped that the school will provide education and training for thousands of young people living in the city of Mombasa.
The Kilkenny troupe consists of Billy Murphy, Larry Cody, Gerard O’ Connor, Pat O’ Keefe, Ciaran Considine, Joe Power, Alan Flynn, Aileen Shefflin, Ger Brennan and Michael Stapleton.
