How to deal with frozen pipes

Kilkenny County Council has issued a number of helpful hints that property owners can adhere to if frozen pipes occur on their premises.

1 During the period of the thaw the public are urged to use water sparingly.

2 If a leak appears on your ceiling

a ) Immediately turn off stopcock (located either under your kitchen sink or outside your house on the public footpath or road edge )

b ) drain the tank in the attic by running the bath taps.

c ) Call a plumber.

3. If you have water in your bathroom, but not in the cold tap at the kitchen sink, the likelihood is your service pipe from the mains is frozen. In this case, use water sparingly - no baths /showers - flush toilets as little as possible and get drinking water from some of the local authority water collection points.

4. If you have water in the cold tap at the kitchen sink, but some or all of the taps or the cistern in your bathroom have no water, then the likely scenario is that some pipes in your attic are frozen and could possibly be burst. If this is the case, turn off the stop cock. Have your attic space checked out.
