New sponsor for top national hunt race day

Tendrleen horsefeeds has announced that it is to sponsor one of Ireland’s premier national hunt races.

The Grade A Tendrleen Thyestes Chase will take place in Gowran Park on Thursday, January 21 when Ireland’s top racehorses compete for a whopping €90,000 prize fund.

This traditional January highlight of the Irish National Hunt season is recognised as the trial for the Aintree and Irish Grand Nationals with previous winners including the legendary Arkle (1964 ), Hedgehunter (2004 ), Numbersixvalverde (2005 ) and Dun Doire (2006 ).

Tendrleen is a premium horse feed which is used by leading National Hunt and flat trainers and breeders including John Oxx who trained Sea the Stars to win six Group One races in six months. The Tendrleen recipe is manufactured by William Connolly and Sons at Goresbridge, Co Kilkenny.

Commenting on the announcement, Gareth Connolly from Tendrleen said, “We are honoured to be in a position to sponsor one of Ireland’s premier National Hunt races. Tendrleen is a leading Irish feed and is used by many top end trainers and breeders in Ireland UK, Europe and Japan. Tendrleen and the Thyestes Chase are a natural fit and we are delighted to create an association with such a prestigious race.”

Margaret Fogarty, general manager of Gowran Park, said: We are delighted to welcome Tendrleen as sponsor of the Thyestes Chase. This support is particularly welcome at what is a difficult time for the racing industry. In the current climate, the industry must support itself and ensure that all available finance stays within the racing and breeding sectors. This announcement will be welcomed and appreciated by everyone involved in National Hunt racing and breeding.”

Brian Kavanagh, chief executive, Horse Racing Ireland, said, “we are delighted that Tendrleen have come on board to sponsor this historic and prestigious race, which will now be called the Tendrleen Thyestes Chase, which is held at Gowran Park, one of Ireland’s most scenic and modern racecourses. It is a difficult economic time for companies and this is a brave move in sponsorship terms, however aligning with racing is a smart choice, race sponsorship is good value and can deliver and promote your brand to a captive audience, and I would like to wish the Connolly Group and Gowran Park the best in their endeavour together.”

On Thyestes Day the racecourse will open from 11am. Tickets are available on the day priced at €17 and €10 for OAP/ students and unemployed people. Group discounts are available by contacting Gowran Park on www.gowranpark.ie or call 056-7726225.
