Soccer star with local connections hits the big time

Soccer star Gary Deegan who began his playing career at Kilkenny City FC has been awarded a three and half years soccer contract with Coventry City Football Club.

The 22-year-old served under then manager Adrian Fitzpatrick when he played at Buckley Park. After his stint with the city club Deegan moved to Bohemians FC and was their key player helping them capture the Premier Division Title. The midfielder began the 2009 season well for Bohemians with some powerful performances. He also excelled in the Bohemians UEFA Champions League qualifying tie against Red Bull Salzburg. However Deegan and Bohemians would depart that competition, cruelly losing 2-1 on aggregate. Worse was to come for Deegan as he got sent off twice in the space of three weeks and served a lengthy suspension. However, he returned for the final games of the season and picked up his second League of Ireland winners medal as Bohemians beat their deadly rivals Shamrock Rovers to the title by four points. Deegan’s talent was rewarded at the end of the season when he was voted onto the 2009 PFAI Team of the Season. He will officially start his contract with Coventry City FC this month.
