Morisca ensemble present a Medieval Christmas concert

The Morisca Ensemble is to play in one of Kilkenny’s most unique venues this week - The Bishop’s Palace.

Morisca is a new, Irish based, ensemble whose members have a mutual interest in medieval and early folk music

The ensemble is made up of Kilkenny based Laoise O’Brien who studied the flute at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama.

Pauline Graham a soprano with a passion for early music. She has performed widely across Europe, including appearances at the Utrecht Early Music Festival, the Cremona Festival and closer to home, at the Galway Early Music Festival. Francesco Turrisi was born in Turin, Italy. He studied music at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague Netherlands where he obtained a Bachelor and a Masters degree in Jazz Piano. And finally Sarah Groser who will play the vielle at the concert having picked up the instrument at the age of nine. The core members of the ensemble have all studied in the Netherlands where their various disciplines have brought them in the direction of this largely unexplored repertoire. The programme, A Medieval Christmas, comprises both sacred and secular music from the middle ages including some well-known tunes such as the Wexford Carol and In Dulci Jubilo along with lesser known chants and dances. The ensemble offers audiences the opportunity to see and hear a variety of instruments not often played in Ireland. The concert will take place on Sunday, December 20, at 3.30pm in the wonderful setting of the Heritage Council headquarters, The Bishop’s Palace.

The ticket price of €10 includes refreshments. Seating capacity is limited so booking is advisable by contacting 087 2877831 or morisca.ensemble@gmail.com
