Suspended sentence for telling garda to f**k off

A young man who told a garda to f… off was handed a 60-day prison sentence which was subsequently suspended, provided he enter a probation bond for one year.

Derek Dalton of 11 Springfield, Waterford Road, Kilkenny pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place and behaving in an abusive manner toward a garda at Lacken, Carlow Road on December 15 last.

Inspector Aidan Brennan told Kilkenny District Court this week how Garda Luke Kelly came upon two men who were engaged in a fight with each other while two women stood watching them.

“When Garda Kelly stopped the patrol car the defendant appeared to be very drunk. When he asked the men their addresses, Dalton told him to f…. off and then raised his fists at Garda Kelly,” Inspector Brennan told the court. Garda Kelly subsequently arrested Dalton and brought him to Kilkenny Garda Station.

Defendant’s solicitor Michael Lanigan said that his client accepted he had too much to drink and he shouldn’t have said what he did to Garda Kelly. “And it appears he shouldn’t drink,” he added. “That would appear blatantly obvious,” stated Judge Harnett before imposing the prison sentence and ordering him to enter a probation bond for one year. Dalton was also fined €760
