Thirtieth Wellie Race to be kick started today

Castlecomer will be up in arms for the organisation of its 30th Wellie Race, the launch of which is on Friday 4, in Shortall’s Lounge, in Castlecomer.

The Wellie Race began when a few men in a pub decided to race each other around Castlecomer as a way of working off all the Christmas excesses. Because it was so wet, the men chose wellies as their footwear. Some 30 years later, the people of Castlecomer come together in their droves every New Year’s Day to re-live the now famous Wellie Race.

This year is no exception, the launch of the Wellie Race will start at 3pm on Friday where sponsorship cards will be available. Also at the launch, the coveted race personality will be announced.

Not only this, but the Wellie Queen will be elected to her throne. Eleven women, sporting their wellies, have been put forward for the title and the winner will be democratically elected by three judges.

This year’s event will be even more spectacular as the people of Castlecomer celebrate this anniversary by ensuring the schedule is jam-packed.

Help kick-start the wellie celebrations by sponsoring a wellie racer this Friday.
