A man who verbally threatened to kill a garda was handed a three month suspended sentence at Castlecomer District Court this week.
Michael Brennan of 17 Church Avenue, Castlecomer pleaded guilty to the offence which took place at the Square, Castlecomer on May 30.
Garda John Bolger told the court that he spoke to two men on the night in question, and while one of the men complied with his instruction the other, Mr Brennan, was very drunk and abusive toward him.
“I spoke to the defendant and told him to leave the area or I would arrest him. However, as he was leaving, he said to me not to get out of the car on my way back or 'I'll f...ing kill you,' stated Garda Bolger.
Defendant's solicitor Mr Michael Lanigan said that his client acknowledged his guilt and was making some efforts to change his ways. “My client has a long history before the courts, primarily alcohol related. However, he is currently in a relationship with a woman who has been a steadying influence on him. He is presently attending a course and is hoping to go back and take the state exams, while he is also an outpatient at a clinic,”explained Mr Lanigan.
Judge Gerard Haughton sentenced Brennan to three months in prison to be suspended, provided he enter a bond of €300 to keep the peace for 12 months. He also fined him €120.
