Tennis - Kilkenny member Eoin McGovern, (son of Rory and Mary McGovern ), was involved in a home nations tournament that took place in the tennis arena in Roehampton, England last weekend. 16 players travelled in the team to represent Ireland in the home nation’s tournament. Age groups represented were under 12, 14, 18 and senior.
Eoin was successful in beating his Welsh opponent in the singles event, and he reached a championship tie-break against his Scottish opponent where he was narrowly beaten, and then lost out to his English opponent.
In the doubles event, he was partnered by Bill Murray from Waterford and they were successful in beating the Welsh and Scottish teams, unfortunately they were beaten by the English pairing.
The next focus on the domestic calendar is the upcoming club championships in Kilkenny tennis club. With the recent upgrading of the lighting system the timing of the popular tournament has been rescheduled to commence on October 8, with finals due to take place Saturday, October 18. The closing date for the competition, which includes singles, doubles and mixed doubles in all grades, is October 1.
The latest outing for the Swingers and Smashers golf society took place in Rathdowney golf club on Saturday, September 6. Results were as follows: in the men’s section first place spoils were taken by Tommy Barry, with Nicky Harte in second place, followed by P Graham in third place. In the ladies section first place was earned by Ann Lee, second place Ita Madigan and third went to Jacinta Culleton. The visitor’s prize was won by John MacMahon.
The weekly American tournaments which takes place on Friday nights in the tennis club have commenced again.
Results of last week’s tournament are as follows: in section 2 the runners-up were Mairead Forristal and Lucy Glendenning. Winners were Lil Downey and Darren Brennan. In section 1, the runners-up spot went to Jacqui Nolan and Brian Hanrahan, with winners Dave Twomey and Jack Byrne taking the spoils in their section.
