Large crowds attended Ballyragget and Piltown on Thursday evening for the senior and junior football county finals that were played under lights for the first time. Exhibiting a high standard of play, the games saw fine second half performances deliver the respective JJ Kavanagh & Sons titles to the sides scheduled to meet in the county senior hurling league final forty-eight hours later.
Village take 7th senior title
A point ahead at the break, James Stephens went onto lead by five points approaching the final ten minutes thanks to fine individual scoring performances with Eoin McCormack contributing 1-7 and Jackie Tyrrell 0-2. In the final minutes, a late Erin's Own rally delivered 1-1 to reduce the lead to a single point as the Village managed to hold onto capture the title on a 1-9 to 1-8 scoreline.
Ballyhale Shamrocks win junior crown with second half blitz
After an even and well contested first half, Ballyhale Shamrocks retired a point ahead of Tullougher Rosbercon at the break on a 0-4 to 0-3 scoreline. On the restart they upped the speed and skill of their play to a standard way above the grade, to capture the junior title.
