A lucky passenger was treated to free flights and a champagne reception when they appeared as the 100,000th passenger to travel through Waterford Airport this week.
This year has been a record-breaking one for Waterford Airport as it checked-in its 100,000th passenger on Monday last.
The regional airport, which serves the people of Kilkenny, Carlow and the south-east with scheduled flights to a wide range of destinations including Amsterdam, London-Luton, Birmingham and Manchester as well as summer routes to a number of continental destinations, has hit this year’s 100,000 passenger mark a full two months ahead of last year.
The celebration was marked by Airport CEO, Graham Doyle, when Leona Taylor from Stockport, Manchester travelling with her partner Mark Wakefield and Daughter Molly-Jo Wakefield (3 ) to Manchester on the 11.25am Aer Arann flight, brought the annual passenger total into six figures for the first time in 2008.
Leona, Mark and Molly-Jo were visiting Mark’s sister Amanda Carson to celebrate her 40th birthday in Waterford. Leona and Mark celebrated in champagne style courtesy of Waterford Airport and were presented with complimentary tickets for flights from Waterford Airport to Amsterdam.
“Having hit 100,000 passengers in mid-November of 2007, to reach this benchmark so early in 2008 is further evidence of the growing popularity and convenience of Waterford Airport for passengers from all over the five counties of the south-east and from even further afield,” said Mr Doyle.
“The summer sun flights are always popular, but this year we’ve seen growth across all services. Our passengers can now fly direct from Waterford Airport to Amsterdam all year round, which means great access not only to Europe, but to the rest of the world through connections from this major hub.”
“We are now enjoying more support than ever from the people of Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Carlow and from further afield as word spreads that Waterford is the hassle-free way to get to the UK and the continent,” added the CEO.
Chairman of Waterford Airport, Nicky Fewer, said that enormous potential still remains to be exploited at Waterford Airport.
